SUMMARY :: Investigates and resolves computer software and hardware problems of users by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Receives telephone calls from users having problems using computer software and hardware or inquiring how to use specific software such as statistical, graphics, data base, printing, word processing, programming languages, electronic mail, and operating systems.
  • Troubleshoots with users to learn procedures followed and source of error.
  • Communicates with end users in person and over the telephone to diagnose and solve problems.
  • Determines whether problem is caused by hardware such as modem, printer, cables, or telephone.
  • Discusses with programmers software errors and recommends changes to programs.
  • Calls software and hardware vendors to request service regarding defective products. Reads trade magazines to obtain current information about computers.
  • Tests software and hardware to evaluate ease of use and whether product will aid user in performing work.
  • Write software and hardware evaluations and recommendations for management review.
  • Trains users on software and hardware on-site or in classroom, or recommends outside contractors to provide training.
  • Installs microcomputers, software, and peripheral equipment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :: High School diploma, or general education degree (GED), or equivalent, six months related experience and/or training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical journals. Ability to write business correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY :: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
